Bats stay hot as Polk State Baseball run rules Pasco-Hernando

WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Baseball continued to swing hot bats on Friday afternoon as the Eagles rolled to a second straight run-rule victory. Polk State needed just seven innings to dispose of reigning NJCAA Division II national champion and No. 1 Pasco-Hernando State College, 17-7.

Most of the damage came early as the Eagles (4-1) put up three-spots in each of the first two innings. Kustarr Webb's two-run home run -- his second of the season -- highlighted the first inning before Hayden Testerman plated two more with a double in the second.

"I wanted to take my approach from the batting cage to the game," Webb said. "I was looking fastball; I got a fastball and a really good pitch to hit."

The Eagles blew things open with an eight-run third inning. Bradyn Potter put Polk State at double digits for a third straight game before Testerman ripped his second two-run double in as many innings. Testerman came around to score on a Webb single.

While Polk State was putting up crooked numbers at the plate, Carson Montsdeoca was nails on the mound. For the second straight start, Montsdeoca kept his opponent off the scoreboard through four innings.

"I'm keeping my pitches mixed up," Montsdeoca said. "My curveball is landing. I've been able to throw a lot of first-pitch strikes and the defense is doing a great job behind me."

After Polk State pushed the lead to 15-0 with a run in the fourth, the Bobcats were finally able to get to the sophomore right-hander with solo home runs from Brandon Gonzales and Alex Rodriguez in the fifth. Those were the only two runs that Montsdeoca allowed over five innings. A transfer from the University of Florida, Montsdeoca finished with four strikeouts while scattering six hits and one walk to pick up his first collegiate win.

"It feels great – like it's been a while," the Fort Meade native said. "We've been scoring a lot of runs, so that makes it really fun. I've enjoyed being able to pitch with a lead."

Following a scoreless sixth on the mound from Polk State sophomore lefty Jason Sawyer, Pasco-Hernando State was able to prolong the game for a half-inning with a five-run seventh. Miscues in the field by Polk State led to four of those runs being unearned.

The Eagles, however, were able to put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the inning. After Testerman scored on a wild pitch, Leo Suarez drew a bases-loaded walk to score Edrick Ayala to end the contest.

For the second straight game, Polk State finished with 16 hits. Eight different players had at least one hit for Polk State and four had multi-hit games. The Eagles have scored 50 runs during their four-game winning streak.

"We're riding momentum right now," Webb added. "We're trusting our approach at the plate and getting our jobs done."

Limited to just 33 games and 89 at-bats by injury last season, Webb set a new career-high with four hits on Friday while driving in three runs and scoring twice. Testerman and Marvin Montenegro each added three hits. Testerman finished with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Montenegro scored three times and drove in a run.

Potter went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs in the win. Zach Lester and Fabian Gavalo each finished the day with two runs scored and an RBI.

Polk State will try to keep its momentum going on Saturday when it visits New Port Richey for a doubleheader at Pasco-Hernando. Each game has been moved up one hour with the first beginning at 12 p.m.

"I feel like I'm falling in love with baseball all over again," Webb concluded. "There's no place I'd rather be right now than with my teammates at Polk State. I want to keep this winning streak going."
