WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Baseball was two outs from victory on Tuesday but couldn't seal the deal. Indian State River State College scored seven runs in the ninth to rally past the Eagles at Bing Tyus Yard, 10-4.

Polk State (5-3) took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning before Indian River State drew even on an RBI single from Niko Benestad. Two batters later, Jacob Suazo singled to give the Pioneers the lead. Polk State's Hayden Porter was able to retire Robert Kramer but Indian River followed with four straight singles to turn the contest into a laugher.

Indian River raced to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Polk State infielder Fabian Gavalo and the bullpen stole the show over the next seven innings.

Gavalo tied the game with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. After Kustarr Webb doubled to lead off the sixth inning, Gavalo singled him home to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

Following the Pioneers' three-run first, Jason Sawyer, Caden Jensen and Dalton Tibbetts combined to keep Indian River off the board over the next 7.1 innings. Sawyer yielded just two hits and two walks while fanning three over 4.1 innings.

At the plate, Webb, Gavalo and Josh Cruz each had two hits. Gavalo drove in all four Polk State runs; Webb scored twice. Benestad and Suazo each had three hits for the Pioneers.

After a 5-2 January, Polk State will try to avoid consecutive losses for the first time this season on Thursday when it hosts Florida Southern College (B). First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
