Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball notched its most impressive win of the season on Saturday. The Eagles opened the day with a 3-2 upset of No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College.
In the circle,
Avery Wende shined. The sophomore transfer from Kansas went the distance, allowing just an earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out two.
At the plate,
Calonnie Holmes set the tone with her second lead-off homer of the year. After getting the scoring started in the bottom of the first, Holmes doubled to start a two-run rally in the third.
Holmes would come around to score on a
Shyla de Lautour RBI single. After a walk, de Latour scored on an error.
Wende held the Buccaneers to just one hit through three innings. After FSW broke up the shutout in the fifth, Giorgiana Woods' solo home run in the sixth cut the Polk State lead to 3-2.
Wende retired FSW in order in the seventh to cap the upset. It is Polk State's eighth win over a nationally ranked team over the last two seasons.
Holmes and de Lautour accounted for all of the Polk State hits with two apiece. Woods had two of the four hits for Florida SouthWestern State.
The Buccaneers bounced back to roll to a 15-3 run-rule victory in five innings the second game. After a run in the first and two in the second, FSW turned it into a rout with eight runs in the third.
The Buccaneers finished with 17 hits as a team. Noelani Livingstone led the way by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Stephanie Basso was also 3-for-4, adding two runs and four RBIs.
Polk State (10-16, 2-8 Citrus Conference) broke up the shutout with two runs in the fourth inning.
Thea Williams and
Leia Hurst had RBI singles to score
Lacey Osborne and
Makenzie Foster, respectively. Holmes stole home in the fifth to cap the scoring.
The game one win gave Polk State its first three-game winning streak of the year. The Eagles will remain home on Tuesday to take on No. 12 Seminole State College of Florida.
