Box Score WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Baseball guaranteed itself at least a .500 finish on Tuesday with a 15-5 run-rule win over Daytona Beach Christian University at Bing Tyus Yard.
After Daytona Beach Christian scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Eagles seized control with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Leo Suarez capped the big inning with a two-run double.
Hayden Testerman put Polk State ahead for good with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but his big fly in the second inning turned the contest into a route. His two-run blast extended the Polk State (27-20) lead to 7-1.
Daytona Beach Christian was able to cut the lead in half with three runs in the third, but that was as close as it would get.
Jack Muller's second RBI of the day in the fourth extended the lead to 8-4 before
Marvin Montenegro scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
The Eagles added four runs in the fifth. Following RBI singles from
Kenay Acevedo and Testerman,
Fabian Gavalo drew a bases-loaded walk.
Zach Lester scored on a wild pitch later in the frame.
In the sixth, Muller and
Roman Corinti were able to draw consecutive RBI walks to push the lead to 15-4. Daytona Beach Christian scored a run in the top of the seventh but
Hayden Porter was able to retire the lone batter he faced to end the contest in seven innings.
Testerman powered the Polk State offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. At the top of the order,
Bradyn Potter, Montenegro and
Edrick Ayala each had two hits. Potter scored five runs. Muller added three RBIs. Robert Alverez finished with two RBIs and two runs for Daytona Beach Christian.
On the mound, five Polk State pitchers combined to allow just two hits.
Bryson Maynard and
Jason Sawyer combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Sawyer was credited with the win.
With the victory, Polk State has equaled last season's win total. The Eagles will resume Citrus Conference play on Thursday at first-place College of Central Florida.
