Box Score GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Polk State Basketball showcased its high-powered offense and team depth in its its first game against NJCAA competition Friday evening. Six different players registered double digit scoring for the Eagles, as they surpassed Gordon State College 94-82 to remain unbeaten on the young season.
The Eagles (3-0) reached their scoring mark of 94 with only a trio of three-point shots on the night. Polk attacked the interior and did a tremendous job of getting to the free throw line against the Highlanders (0-5), going 27-for-36 (75%) from the charity stripe on the night.
"This was a good test for our young team," said Polk State Head Coach Brandon Giles. "I am proud of how we stepped up, absorbed their runs, and responded."
With eight different individuals making a field goal for Polk in the first half, the Eagles took a 49-34 lead into the half.
Freshman point guard
Ty Owens was a man on a mission to the charity stripe in the second half for Polk, going 16-for-18 at the line in the second half and finishing with a team-high 20 points, which is the most Owens has scored in his young collegiate career.
The trio of
Dominick Nelson,
Justin Daniels, and
Malachi Stevens each finished with 13 points for the Eagles.
In his first game of the season for Polk State, sophomore Spoon River College transfer
TrayVon Osborne bucketed 12 points. Freshman
Cole White also made his season debut for the Eagles, registering 11 points in his first collegiate contest.
"The couple of guys who played their first game of the season were game changers for us," added Giles. "Hats off to Gordon State for playing this hard and still hitting shots playing their third game in three days."
The Eagles look to close out the Santa Fe Classic on Saturday with another victory. Polk takes on Andrew College with a 1 p.m. scheduled tipoff.
