Mercer plates 5, Corbeil ties Tyus in Polk State Baseball's rout of Panthers

Box Score WINTER HAVEN – Bing Tyus remains Polk State Baseball's all-time wins leader, but he's no longer alone. Head Coach Al Corbeil picked up his school record-tying 418th win in a 12-4 victory over South Florida State College on Wednesday night.

Interesting enough, it was Tyus, then the director of athletics, who hired Corbeil prior to the 2011 season.

"I'm honored to be part of this rich tradition," Corbeil said. "I'm fortunate to have worked under Bing Tyus and had him mentor me as a young coach and to follow in the path laid before me. It really has been a privilege to be part of this program."

Polk State (7-6) used a big fourth inning to take the lead for good and a big seventh to turn the contest into a rout on Wednesday night. Trailing 2-0 after three, the Eagles sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning .

Following a bases-loaded walk to Pierce Glading and a tying sacrifice fly off the bat of Aaron Stelogeannis, Ray Mercer came through with a two-run single to right field to give the Eagles their first lead, 4-2. Nelson Taylor pushed the lead to 6-2 with a 2-run double later in the inning.

Mercer would add a 3-run triple during the big seventh to cap a 5-RBI night. As a team, Polk State finished with 15 hits. In addition to Mercer, Travis Stapleton, Damion Kenealy, J'Quann Smith, Stelogeannis, and Aris Rivera each had two hits. Rivera scored three runs in the victory.

Brylan West supplied the offense for South Florida State. West had hits – two doubles and a single – and scored runs in each of his first three at-bats.

On the mound, Evan Koehler battled through five innings to earn his second win in as many starts. Trevor Caldwell and Sam Duvall combined to allow just two hits in four innings of scoreless relief.

With the victory, Polk State has now won seven of its last eight games and is over .500 for the first time this season. Corbeil can surpass Tyus with a victory on Friday when the Eagles travel to take on Seminole State College of Florida.

"As the longest tenured head coach at Polk State College, Coach Corbeil continues to impress with his work ethic and by the way he brings out the best in our student-athletes," said Stanley Cromartie, Director of Athletics. "Winning 418 games is a fantastic accomplishment and we hope No. 419 comes very soon. We are fortunate to have him as part of our institution and our Athletics Department."
