Box Score WINTER HAVEN – The first two and a half innings left much to be desired, but Polk State Baseball eventually figured things out on Tuesday night. The Eagles rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Webber International University (B), 7-6.
After pushing a run across in each of the first two innings, the Warriors extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run third. The Eagles (5-5) needed just a half inning to draw even, scoring five runs in the top of the third.
After
Luis Turmero doubled and scored, Polk State used a two-run triple by
Damion Kenealy to cut the lead to 5-3.
Liam O'Neil followed with his first career home run – a two-run blast – to tie the game at five apiece.
The Eagles went ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth when
Aaron Stelogeannis singled home
Roberto Odor. Kenealy doubled the lead to 7-5 with an RBI double in the sixth.
Polk State's run of dominant starting pitching came to an end on Tuesday night, but the back end of the bullpen did not disappoint.
Jake Echols,
Aiden Alvarez, and Kenealy combined to allow just two hits and no earned runs in five innings of relief.
Webber International (B) was able to add an unearned run in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one. Kenealy worked around a one-out single in the ninth to pick up his first save and cap a big night.
In addition to the save, Kenealy finished with four hits, three RBIs, and a run scored at the plate.
Greg Pettay added two hits. Odor scored twice. On the mound, Alvarez worked two scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the year.
Polk State will look to move over .500 for the first time this season on Wednesday night as it visits South Florida State College. The Panthers beat the Eagles 6-3 when the teams met in Auburndale earlier this season. The contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
