Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – An extra day of rest worked out just fine for Polk State Baseball as the Eagles continued their winning ways by sweeping a doubleheader against Daytona State College on Sunday. The contests were originally scheduled for Saturday but postponed for weather.
The two games were quite different, but the Eagles (23-15, 11-7 Citrus) found a way to win both. After taking the first game in walk-off fashion, Polk State rolled to a 12-2 rout in the second game.
Despite 13 hits in the first game, Polk State managed just one run through the first six innings of the seven-inning contest.
Greg Pettay clinched the series for the Eagles with a walk-off single on a chopper that scored pitch runner
Nicholas Upperman in a 2-1 victory.
Upperman had come in to run for
Kelsen Johnson before scoring the winning run. Prior to the bottom of the seventh, both of the game's runs came in the first inning. After the Falcons drew first blood in the top of the first, Polk State evened things in the bottom of the inning as
Aris Rivera doubled home
Roberto Odor.
Odor and Rivera each finished with a pair of hits in the first game while
Liam O'Neil was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. The story, however, was starting pitcher
Evan Koehler who went the distance in the seven-inning affair. Koehler allowed just a run on five hits and one walk while fanning six.
In the second game,
Trevor Caldwell and
Wade Johnson combined to hold Daytona State to just two runs on four hits. Caldwell went 5.2 innings, allowing the two runs on four hits, and three walks. The lefty tied a season-high with nine strikeouts.
The Eagles finished with 18 hits and scored in each of the first six innings of the contest. The top three hitters in the Polk State order – Odor, Pettay, and
Damion Kenealy – combined to go 9-for-11 with five runs scored and six RBIs.
Each had three hits. Odor and Pettay each scored twice. Pettay drove in two runs while Kenealy added four RBIs.
Aaron Stelogeannis also had a three-hit day with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Pierce Glading and Johnson each had two hits and an RBI.
Evan Wainman added two RBIs of his own. Adam Parzych scored runs in each of the two games for Daytona State.
With the victories, Polk State has now won 11 of its last 12 games and eight of nine in Citrus Conference play. The Eagles will get three days of rest before hosting Indian River State College on Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
