Polk State Baseball bounces back to take series vs. Miami Dade

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI — Polk State Baseball bounced back from a heartbreaking loss on Saturday to win the second game of the doubleheader and take the Citrus Conference series over Miami Dade College.

Polk State capped the day with a 10-4 victory. After a solo homer from Polk State's Andy Schroeder got the scoring started in the third inning, the Eagles went ahead for good on Jordan Thomas' two-run single in the fourth. Mason Mojica came through with a two-run home run an inning later to extend the lead to 5-1.

Polk State blew things open with four runs in the sixth. Josh Cruz finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Thomas and Schroeder each had two hits in the win.

On the mound, starter Gavin Dicks gave Polk State five strong innings. He allowed just an unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Michael Petite and Talan Beckford each homered for Miami Dade in the loss. Schroeder, Mojica, Derek Fermaint, and Liam O'Neil each scored twice for Polk State.

Miami Dade scored three runs in the seventh, including two unearned runs, to take the first game — a seven-inning contest— in walk-off fashion, 4-3.

For five innings, a solo home run from Miami Dade's Michael Petite had accounted for all the offense. In the sixth, Polk State pulled ahead with three runs.

A single by Schroeder and a walk to Kustarr Webb started the rally. Following a fielding error that allowed the Eagles to tie the game, Zach Lester had the go-ahead RBI for the second time in as many games against the Sharks. After a sixth-inning grand slam in Thursday's win, an RBI single did the job on Saturday. Polk State added a run on an RBI groundout from Cruz.

In the seventh, however, the Sharks got to Polk State closer Wade Johnson. Miami Dade scored two runs on wild pitches to tie the game before Denixson Suarez provided the walk-off single.

On the mound, Polk State got a strong 4.1 innings from starter Jake Echols, who allowed just a run on three hits and two walks. Four errors in the field, however, did in the Eagles.

Schroeder finished 3-for-4 with a run scored in the loss. Johnson took the loss.

Now 14-11 and 6-3 in Citrus Conference play, Polk State will get a bit of an extended rest this week. The Eagles will hit the road to visit Hillsborough Community College on Thursday.
