Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – For the first time since the inception of the Citrus Conference last season, Polk State Baseball has been swept in a three-game series. No. 7 Indian River State College capped the sweep by taking both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Jake Echols was solid for the Eagles (21-19, 11-10 Citrus Conference) in the first game, allowing just three runs in six innings. Unfortunately for Polk State, Indian River's Shane Lavin was just a bit better in a 3-1 victory for the Pioneers.
Scoreless through four innings, the Pioneers went ahead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth of the seven-inning contest. Polk State scored its only run in the bottom of the inning.
Hayden Testerman and
Liam O'Neil opened the frame with back-to-back singles – the only two hits of the game for the Eagles. Testerman would score on an RBI groundout from
Simon Scharff. Indian River answered with a run in the top of the sixth.
Lavin went all seven for the Pioneers, yielding just the two hits and a walk. Jacob Souza was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Polk State was able to erase an early four-run deficit in the second game but couldn't hold on. Indian River State was able to score five straight runs to secure a 9-6 victory.
Down 4-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, Polk State drew even with four runs in the frame. After
Jordan Thomas singled home the first run, Testerman followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Mason Mojica drew the Eagles even with an RBI double.
Polk State grabbed a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Testerman's RBI groundout. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the fifth with an RBI groundout from Maikol Lucena giving them the lead.
Indian River extended the lead to 9-5 with sacrifice flies in the seventh and ninth innings. Polk State capped the scoring with two outs in the ninth on an RBI double from
Andre Mason.
Despite the loss, Polk State finished with 11 hits. Thomas, Testerman, O'Neil, and
Derek Fermaint each had two hits. Fermaint scored three of the six runs while Testerman drove in three. Lucena was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored for Indian River.
With the defeats, Polk State has now lost four straight games and six of its last seven. The Eagles will try to turn things around when they start the month of April at home on Tuesday against Webber International University (B).
