Polk State Baseball splits pair of tight ones vs. Seminole State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — In a pair of highly competitive games, Polk State Baseball settled for a doubleheader split with Seminole State College of Florida on Saturday at Bing Tyus Yard.

Polk State was no-hit in the first game but that didn't stop the Eagles from picking up a walk-off win in the seven-inning contest, 1-0.

Simon Scharff delivered the sacrifice fly to score Kenay Acevedo in the bottom of the seventh. Acevedo walked on four pitches to open the inning before advancing to second on a passed ball one pitch later.

Intentional walks bookended a sacrifice bunt from Mason Mojica. With the bases loaded and one out, Scharff was able to lift it to left field.

The story was starting pitcher Jake Echols, who allowed just three hits and one walk. Echols went all seven innings and struck out seven. The Raiders put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the seventh but Echols used a pop-out and strikeout to get out of the jam.

Seminole State's Garrett Caropreso was stellar as well. He kept Polk State scoreless and hitless through six innings before opening the seventh with back-to-back walks.

After combining for just one run and three hits in the first game, the offenses came to life in the second game. In a contest with 14 runs and 21 hits, a six-run spurt was the difference as Seminole State salvaged the split, 8-6.

The Raiders jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Eagles stormed back. Jordan Thomas grounded out in the second inning to break up the shutout before Andy Schroeder gave Polk State (27-25, 14-16 Citrus Conference) a 4-2 lead with a bases-clearing double in the third inning.

Seminole State scored the next six runs. After plating one in the fourth, the Raiders retook the lead with two runs in the fifth. Nic Pepe's RBI double put Seminole State ahead to stay.

Down 8-4 after seven, Polk State cut the lead in half on Hayden Testerman's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth. After leaving the tying run on base in the eighth, the Eagles went in order in the ninth.

Schroeder finished 3-for-4 for Polk State while Testerman added two hits. Pepe finished with three hits for the Raiders.

Despite not allowing an earned run in 4.2 innings of work, Wade Johnson took the loss. He was victimized for five unearned runs.

With the doubleheader split, Seminole State takes the Citrus Conference series. The teams, however, will meet again in non-conference action on Tuesday in Sanford. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
