Box Score AVON PARK -- The long ball proved to be Polk State Baseball's friend on Tuesday evening. Four different Polk State players homered as the Eagles rolled to an 11-5 road victory over South Florida State College.
A solo home run by Landon Carter gave South Florida State an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, however, the Eagles went ahead for good. After
Andy Schroeder gave Polk State (26-23) the lead with a two-run home run,
Zach Lester added a two-run bomb of his own later in the inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Panthers got as close as one with a three-run fourth, but Polk State answered with a solo home run from
Liam O'Neil in the fifth to push the advantage to 6-4. Polk State opened up an 8-4 lead with two runs in the sixth before South Florida State got one back on a Zach Doorlag solo home run to open the sixth.
After the teams traded zeroes for the first time since the first inning in the seventh, the Eagles turned the contest into a rout on a three-run home run from
Hayden Testerman in the eighth. Testerman finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Jordan Thomas,
Kevin Brunet, and Schroeder each added two hits for Polk State.
Kenay Acevedo scored three runs in the victory. Carter finished with two runs scored and two hits for the Panthers.
Jason Sawyer and
Jackson Graden each allowed just a run in three innings apiece on the mound. Graden set a career-high with seven strikeouts.
Roman Corinti struck out two during a scoreless ninth to close it out.
Following the nice bounce-back win, Polk State will remain on the road to begin a pivotal Citrus Conference series against Seminole State College of Florida on Thursday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
