Polk State Baseball's Corbeil gets 500th win as Eagles split with Titans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Baseball Head Coach Al Corbeil picked up the 500th win of his career on Saturday as the Eagles split a home doubleheader with Eastern Florida State College.

In a seven-inning contest, Polk State took the first game, 9-6. With the win, Corbeil became the first Polk State head coach to reach the milestone in any sport.

With the score tied 1-1, Polk State got out of a bases-loaded, nobody out situation with a triple play to end the top of the second. The Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when Jordan Thomas singled home Andy Schroeder.

Polk State added to its lead with a five-run third inning to extend the advantage to 8-1. Derek Fermaint and Zach Lester each had two-run singles during the inning.

Eastern Florida was able to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out during a three-run sixth inning. Polk State's Zane Wright, however, was able to use a double play and a flyout to minimize the damage and end the threat.

Eastern Florida also brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Wade Johnson was able to induce a flyout to collect his FCSAA-leading sixth save. Jake Echols went five innings, allowing three earned runs, to pick up the win. Lester, Fermaint, and Liam O'Neil each had two hits and a run scored for Polk State in the win.

In the second game, a pair of fifth-inning errors proved critical as Eastern Florida took the nightcap and the series, 7-4.

The Eagles (23-21, 12-12 Citrus Conference) drew first blood on an RBI single by Lester in the bottom of the third. Eastern Florida went ahead for good with five unearned runs in the fifth.

Kevin Smith's two-run double gave the Titans a 2-1 lead. Gustavo Mendez added an RBI double later in the inning.

Polk State, from there, could get no closer than three. Gavin Dicks took the loss despite not allowing a run in his five innings of work.

Lester, Fermaint, and Kenay Acevedo each finished with two hits for Polk State. Smith was 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Titans.
