Box Score LEESBURG – In a contest where there was no shortage of offense, Polk State Baseball outslugged Lake-Sumter State College on Tuesday.
Â
After giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first,
Liam O'Neil delivered the biggest blow of the day for Polk State with his team-leading sixth home run of the day – a three-run blast – during a four-run third inning that extended the lead to 6-1.
Â
The Lakehawks were able to get a pair back on Eli Thurmond's two-run single in the fourth. Polk State (24-21) pushed across four runs for the second time in three innings. An error and wild pitch gave the Eagles their first two runs in the fifth before
Jordan Thomas went the other way for a two-run single.
Â
Down 10-3, Lake-Sumter refused to go quietly as it responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Tanner Reid's grand slam that cut the deficit to 10-8.
After the teams traded zeroes in the sixth, Thomas gave Polk State some breathing room with a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 13-8. Thomas came around to score on
Zach Lester's single as the Eagles recorded their third four-run inning.
After Lake-Sumter scored twice in the eighth, Polk State capped the scoring with a run in the ninth. Both teams finished with 13 hits.
Thomas (5) and O'Neil (4) combined for nine RBIs. Thomas finished three hits. Lester, O'Neil,
Kevin Brunet, and
Derek Fermaint each added two hits.Â
